First things first, I just wanted to make it absolutely clear that I adore this movie... (I know I could have very easily done the thing where I meta-reference the movie's title in that last sentence hahaha) I had such an incredible watching this film for the first time (and also the second.)
A friend of mine had been raving about this film and recommended that I watch it. He refused to tell me much about the film, but he urged me to watch it as soon as possible. It was a Sunday night, 10:30pm, I just got out of work. I decide to catch a midnight screening of the movie. I try to purchase my ticket in advance and I find that it's nearly sold out! (It was like week 3 or something.) I think there were only a few seats in the front and one seat available in the very back of the theater so I go for the seat in the back.
I take my seat and more and more people begin pouring into the theatre. I'm not necessarily a movie guy and I don't know what to expect. I often struggle to stay awake whenever I watch movies so I kind of feared that it will be the same in regard to this movie (nothing against the films I've fallen asleep to, I am a "pacer" so it's very easy for me to fall asleep if I sit down long enough.) Something that really compelled me to watch this film was the fact that much of its plot is pretty much revealed, at least, I believed so based on the trailers (Guy makes a wish for girl to like him, girl likes him, it turns out bad.) It was bothering me though... I felt I knew too much already and I wanted to figure out what else was there to experience.

This movie was really intriguing in many ways. For one, this movie didn't have an extravagant budget. It was an indie film made by an amateur independent director which inspired me quite a lot. Another thing was that this project had a cast of new faces that were breaking through with this film. They did an absolute incredible job as this was my first impression of them. I have always hoped to see something that would move me with performers I had never seen or heard of personally and this was that film.
I was genuinely invested in the film's drama. I loved that, at some point during the movie, I relaxed and was carried through 1 hour and 48 minutes of its runtime with my full attention.
This movie says much more despite it being a horror film. It seems it wasn't simply a horror film at all, but 'horror' was used to drive its deeper themes concerning relationship dynamics, rejection, and manipulation. Now, without summarizing the story too much and regurgitating the same talking points about the film that you can find pretty much anywhere on the internet, I have to discuss my favorite part about the film: the conversations.
I had plenty of really rewarding conversations with people concerning this movie. I loved hearing about how the characters caused some people to reflect on their past experiences with relationships and being able to see people for who they are rather than what we want them to be. These conversations were really fruitful for the sake of creating deeper and more genuine relationships with one another, especially romantic ones.
I think this is the first movie to make me truly fall in love with film as a medium. This is the first movie I have ever seen where I watched it twice in theaters. (That really means something to me!) I think it did a lot of things very well, in my opinion. It made me reflect on my failures as a person and how I perceived my past relationships, but it also allowed for me to connect with other people that have also had similar experiences with the film's narrative..I loved it a lot.. I hope to find more films that speak to me in such a way.. I think from this point on, thanks to the movie Obsession (and my friend's recommendation), I will be looking excitedly toward the future of filmmaking and being able to connect with people in the discourse of cinema.
